  • Stimulate the Economy, Not Government

A few months have passed since the election, and that's enough time to consider the outcome and take stock of our party's future. I want to make clear that I'm optimistic: our ideas are good, and our agenda will make America freer and stronger.

And our voice needs to be heard, now more than ever.

This is a time of hardship and uncertainty for millions of Americans. Unfortunately, the new President and the Democratic Congressional majority seem more concerned with stimulating the government than stimulating the economy. They have a lot of campaign rhetoric to make good on and plenty of special interests to pay back.

As the opposition party, we are entirely free to do what is right for the country. There are certain advantages to that kind of freedom, and I suggest we make the most of them.

    I know I have been.

Recently, I addressed the House Republican Conference Retreat with my thoughts on how to turn around the economy and get America back on the right track. I also testified before Congress about the importance of making tax cuts the centerpiece of the 2009 economic stimulus package. And with your support, I will continue to fight for the principles in which we both believe.

Will you join me in making the most of this opportunity and making your voice heard? One way to do so is by contributing $10, $25, $50, $100, $250, $500 - or even the maximum $5,000 - to my Free and Strong America PAC. And if you contribute at least $30, we will send you a signed, limited edition "Stimulate the economy, not the government" button. This is the perfect way to show your friends and neighbors where you stand at this critical time for our party and our nation.

This great party of ours has seen setbacks before. They have never defined us. For our party, I believe this will be remembered as the time when we demonstrated the strength of our convictions, when we defended the foundations of America's prosperity, security and liberty. The comeback for our nation and for our party starts with you. I hope I can count on you as an ally in the work ahead.

  • A Republican Stimulus Plan

Today, at the National Review website, I write about the need for economic stimulus.

Government needs to take immediate action to boost the economy, without sacrificing our long term growth. This means lowering taxes for individuals and businesses, and investment in infrastructure, military modernization, and energy research.

  • Thank you

This is a quick note to thank you for your support for the Free and Strong America PAC – it made a real difference in the elections. First, it enabled me to travel across the country to campaign, build media and raise funds for Republicans in battleground contests. All totaled, I did events for 33 Republican candidates running for federal office. Your support also helped me in my effort for Senator McCain and Governor Palin – I participated in 37 surrogate events around the country for their election.

In addition, your support permitted the PAC to make financial contributions to over 150 contests at the federal and state level, again on behalf of people and groups who we believe will help keep our country strong and free. We were highly gratified that in these races where we provided financial support we were largely victorious, with a 60 percent win rate.

There is still unfinished business from the 2008 election. We are currently working to help Senator Norm Coleman in the Minnesota recount and Senator Saxby Chambliss in his runoff election in Georgia – it is critical that we retain the ability to filibuster in order to prevent a liberal reconstruction of our nation.

I want you to know how much I appreciate all you have done to help. It means a great deal to Ann and me, and we believe that it means a great deal to the country as well. Like you, we are very concerned about the direction the nation may take under an Obama administration and a liberal Congress. The work we have done, thanks to you, has kept the conservative flame burning.

The PAC will continue to work for a free and strong nation. During the coming year, I will travel, campaign, appear in media interviews, raise funds, write, blog and do everything I can imagine to stand up for what we believe. I consider it a privilege to have you on our team.

  • Statement on the Presidential Election

I want to congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his remarkable achievement. It may have been late in coming, but the election of the first African-American president will stand as a testament to our nation’s founding principle that ‘all men are created equal.’ I also want to extend my best wishes to his wife, Michelle, and two young daughters, as they embark on a new and exciting chapter for their family and our nation. We are all Americans first, standing above party and politics. It’s time to call on the good will of people everywhere to help our president-elect address the pressing needs of the nation.

John McCain is a decent and honorable man. He, too, will go down in history as a statesman and a patriot. I am proud to call him my friend. He carried the banner of the Republican Party in a politically challenging year. I look forward to working with Senator McCain, Governor Palin and many other Republican leaders in rebuilding the party nationally so that it can once again contribute to the great strength of our country. Together we can meet the challenges of a new century and leave our children and grandchildren with an America that is as strong and free as the one we know.

  • McCain vs. Obama, the Nashville Debate

I attended last night's Presidential debate at Belmont University in Nashville. Not at all like a real Town Hall meeting, but then TV has a hard time with "real."

Senator McCain distinguished himself on at least two topics.

First, he called for a program that would halt the decline in home values and help homeowners with upside down mortgages. It's a bold initiative and I will be interested in seeing how it works. Of course, there's not enough money in Washington to bail out everyone who made an imprudent investment, nor would that be a good idea. The Treasury secretary was given the power to grant such relief in the recently passed $700 billion financial stabilization package. These funds, together with those previously appropriated in last summer's housing bill, may be more effective if they were used to enhance the free market cooperative I spoke of during my own campaign. I look forward to learning more about the details of the McCain plan.

The other point that caught my attention was Senator McCain's unhesitating support for Israel. Asked whether they would wait for the UN or act unilaterally to defend Israel from attack, Senator McCain was unequivocal in his support: "We will not allow another Holocaust." Senator Obama was characteristically nuanced, focusing on Iran. Hopefully, those who care about our allies and friends took notice.

  • Comments on the passing of Iowa's Marvin Pomerantz

Tomorrow is the funeral for a good friend, Marvin Pomerantz, who has given me a lot of advice and political insight and who is the source of so many wonderful memories.

Iowa and the country lost one of our heroes when Marvin was called home. As a tireless champion for youth, a creator of economic vitality and employment, and a voice for principled leadership, Marvin shaped the community in lasting ways.

I will miss his brilliance and candor, but mostly, I will miss his indefatigable good humor and cheer. A truly great soul has left us. Ann and I are saddened by his passing.

  • Progress on Health Care

Today I write about health care reform in the Wall Street Journal. Check it out by clicking here.

States are laboratories of innovation, and the most ambitious experiment now taking place is in Massachusetts. As Governor, I worked with the Legislature to lower the cost of private market insurance and get everyone covered. The plan isn’t perfect, and there needs to be some fine-tuning, but the good news is that we are making progress. We are getting insurance to more people, faster than any other state in the nation, without a government takeover and without raising taxes.

The lesson here is that states can lead the way on health care, if the federal government provides the needed flexibility and becomes a partner.

  • Applauding the Supreme Court's Gun Ruling

The Supreme Court got it exactly right today in their decision affirming an individual right to bear arms.

What concerns me is that four members of the court dissented. The narrow 5-4 ruling is yet another reminder of the importance of appointing strict constructionist judges who will not read rights out of the Constitution but instead affirm the ones that are plainly stated there.

In striking down the DC ban on handgun ownership, the Court stood up for one of our most cherished freedoms, the freedom to defend our lives, our property and our liberty. This should put to rest once and for all the fanciful notion that gun ownership in America is tied to membership in a state militia.

  • Flood Relief Donations Urgently Needed

My wife Ann and I have been devastated by the catastrophic floods that have left so many people homeless and spread misery throughout the Midwest. Many of the scenes of devastation in Iowa are places familiar to us, and our hearts ache for the many kind and generous people we met there who may now be dealing with personal loss and tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of people dealing with the loss of a home, as well as the disaster relief workers who are fighting to contain the floodwaters and provide emergency food and shelter to the victims.

Although Iowa may be experiencing some of the worst damage, the record-high flooding is also affecting Nebraska, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and parts of Michigan.

Relief efforts are going to cost tens of millions of dollars, and I encourage you to join us in contributing to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. They are coordinating with emergency officials and faith-based groups to get relief supplies to the areas where they are needed. They provide shelter and the basic necessities, such as cots, blankets and personal comfort kits. To find out how you can help, or to get the latest information, visit www.redcross.org. You can also check out an interactive map to get a sense of the current Red Cross response.

  • Back on the Trail

Content ImageI miss the campaign trail. Yes, it was grueling, but it was also energizing and what we did together was important for the country. You heard me speak time and again about how critical the current times are for America. Because I believe that so profoundly, I have helped form Free and Strong America PAC to promote conservative policies and candidates. Senator McCain’s presidential campaign is at the top of the list.

I haven’t been sitting on my hands these last few months, nor do I intend to do so. I have spoken at GOP events from Nevada to Pennsylvania to Maine. Ann and I are raising funds for key campaigns across the country. This PAC will enable us to keep fighting for the causes and candidates that will strengthen American values.

The best part of the last few months has been seeing the kids and the grandkids. Tagg and Jen live just down the street—we drop in on them like Frank and Marie on “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Ben and Ande live one town away from us. Great news there—they are expecting their first. Craig and Mary, back in New York, are due for their second in mid July. Josh and Jen were rumored to be mulling politics in Utah but are planning to stick to the private sector. And they too are expecting; it will be their fourth. Matt and Laurie had their fourth child a few months ago. So four new grandchildren in one year. What a pace!

A highlight, too, was the Beach Boys concert in Texas that L.E. Simmons hosted for many of us to see each other again. The reunion brought back fond memories of the campaign and it was great to see friends and supporters.

Ann and I want to thank all of you who believed in our campaign. We are not disappearing—we will continue to fight for a free and strong America. And we hope to see you as we crisscross the country.
