Lamar Smith
As a senior Member of the Texas Congressional Delegation, Congressman Lamar Smith has represented residents of the 21st Congressional District since 1987. Technology companies and research universities form the core of the district’s economy. Congressman Smith vigorously pursues their interests from his position as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property of the House Judiciary Committee. This important congressional panel influences a wide array of technology policies because of its jurisdiction over intellectual property matters.
Congressman Smith also works for the interests of the district through his service on the Homeland Security and Science Committees. Both of these committees affect the district’s technology interests as well. For example, the Science Committee deals with many matters relating to scientific research and development, including NASA. Many companies in the district have interests in this area.
Recognized for his fairness and common sense judgment, Congressman Smith has earned the respect of the leaders of the House of Representatives. The Speaker appointed him to the Ethics Committee at the beginning of this Congress. His Texas Republican colleagues also chose him to serve as their representative on the Republican Steering Committee which determines committee assignments and chairmanships.
Congressman Smith’s seniority allows him to deliver for his district in a variety of other ways. He recognizes the great need for improved transportation in the district. In the highway bill recently enacted into law, he obtained $12.8 million in funding for transportation projects for the 21st district.
